The Abbey
Dilapidated ... but not dead
Have you ever been to an old abbey, where time has taken its toll, but you can still feel something of the peace, serenity and spirituality of the place? Even though the walls may have crumbled, the place is far from dead, something of the spiritual life lives on. The old spirituality of this place may not be your thing, but you can still feel something stirring.
In a virtual world, our virtual abbey is just that, a spiritual place where we can gather and share in conversation about what makes us spiritual beings, and how that calls us to make this world a better place.
This architecture of the old abbey guides our three-fold ethos ...
Eternity
For hundreds of years the monks have gathered in the sanctuary to offer worship. Although that space may now lie in ruins, and worship ceased there, the years of spiritual devotion can still be felt in the stones that are left. No longer a church, now a neutral space, it is still a spiritual place, where we can connect with that which we know lies above and beyond us.
Community
Many would call the abbey home over the years, giving up their old lives and entering into a community with a common purpose. Over shared meals in the refectory, people would grow together and form relationships that would feed the care that the monks offered to those around them. Building community to bless community is at the heart of what we do.
Life in the abbey always had an outward focus, and the infirmary was one of the places that would be at the heart of serving the community and welcoming those in need. Here at Sanctuary and Soul, we are passionate about serving our local community and embodying a love for our neighbour.
